Overall a very successful lot of racing from NUBC over the course of Henley royal regatta, fielding 50 athletes and 7 boats, a new record for the club.

TEMPLE CHALLENGE CUP

In the Temple challenge cup, we had two eights qualify for racing. The Temple B eight won its first round of racing on the Wednesday against York university with a comfortable margin progressing through to the Thursday where they were unfortunately knocked out by Magdalene College and Sidney Sussex C.
The Temple A crew beat Bristol University on the Thursday but were knocked out by Imperial College London A on the Friday.

VISITORS’ CHALLENGE CUP

In the Visitors Challenge Cup, the lightweight Newcastle University 4- (BUCS Champions) beat Pangbourne college on the Thursday moving through to the Friday set of racing where they lost out to D.S.R Laga and A.G.S.R Gyas of the Netherlands.

ISLAND CHALLENGE CUP

In the Island Challenge cup, Newcastle university B crew made their own bit of history being the first race of the Island against Durham university who won the race, the Island A crew narrowly missed out against University of London B crew on the Friday of Henley.

PRINCE ALBERT CHALLENGE CUP

In the Prince Albert challenge cup, the unfortunate draw saw Newcastle A beat Newcastle B on the Thursday of racing, the Newcastle A crew then progressed through to race Lady Margaret B.C. Cambridge on the Friday of whom they beat. When Saturday racing came around Newcastle faced Bristol in the semi final who they beat – seeing the mens four progress all the way to the final of Henley Royal where they came up against University of London and had a tough fight the entire way down the course where they were just pipped to the line.

NUBC BLUE STAR (Alumni)

There were some tight races in the heats - including James Reeder vs James Stevenson battling it out in the Wyfolds on Friday. Notably, six Newcastle alumni racing for Tyne (featuring a mother/daughter combo if the HRR commentary was to be believed) made it to the weekend of the new Club womens' 8s event, the Wargrave Challenge Cup. That meant going into finals day, there were an incredible 9 alumni on the programme:

  • Michael Trevena and Hannah Taylor in the Thames Challenge Cup (Club M8+) - they prevailed to defeat fellow blue star Oli Knight (racing for Molesey). This was Michael's second win after claiming the Brit in 2018.

  • Oliver Costley won the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup (Intermediate M4x) - racing for Leander.

  • James Reeder won the Wyfold Challenge Cup (Club M4-) - his first win following ten previous appearances at HRR

  • Lola Anderson won the Princess Royal Challenge Cup (Open W1x) in a thrilling race. Lola was the first British winner of the event since Debbie Flood in 2000, and only the second British winner since the event was created in 1993.

  • Natasha Harris-White won the Princess Grace Challenge Cup (Open W4x) for Leander in a fantastic race.

  • Will Stewart won the Ladies Challenge Plate (Intermediate M8+). Unfortunately racing for Brookes, but we were chuffed he put on his blue star blazer for prizegiving.

  • Dan Graham was racing for Leander in the Visitors (Intermediate M4-).

Totaling 6 wins for the NUBC Alumni, drawing equal with 2018’s record.

Overall a really strong showing from NUBC and the blue star at Henley royal regatta 2021.

It was also lovely to finally be able to hold the annual Henley NUBC BBQ, where the new Blue Star 8+ (donated by the Blue Star Foundation) was named and christened by, now Olympian, James Rudkin.
