As the major focus of the Autumn training, the November trials weekend is a huge milestone in the season for everyone in the club.  While the majority of athletes remain in newcastle for a 2k and 5k test on the ergo, our trialists head south to Boston, where this year, they delivered excellent performances on and off the water.

Across the club, many saw record times on their 2k tests putting to good use the first block of training,  For those in Newcastle, this was followed up by equally good performances on the 5k test as well.

Those in Boston raced very well during the 5k water test.  Having just missed the ergo cutoff, Lola Anderson put together an outstanding piece on the water to finish 4th overall and the fastest U23 sculler, despite only being entered in BUCS Small Boats Head. Standout performances also came from James Stevenson and Fiona Chestnutt who were both the 4th quickest scullers in their respective Lightweight event.  Not to be outdone, Freddie Allinson and Will Stewart equalled this placing too, as they finished 11th overall.  Nicole Lamb performed well in her single, ultimately placing 12th.  The rest of the Lightweight Men raced well with Rob Fuller 7th u23 sculler, Hugo Storey 23rd overall and Alex Laws 30th.  Following a last minute switch into the single scull, Tom Davies put together a creditable piece in what was his first senior trials. The res of the Heavyweight Men raced in pairs finishing 22nd, 25th and 31st.  Those who were in Boston to compete in BUCS SBH raced very well for the university picking up valuable points during the weekend’s racing.

Our alumni and former club members were also in action in Boston.  George Rossiter left having won the Men’s Pairs, head of James Robson in 7th and Oli Knight 10th.  In the Women’s event Natasha Harris-White delivered an excellent 2nd place performance.  Dom Jackson left as the 2nd fastest u23 Lightweight sculler, beating 2016 World Champion, Oliver Varley who came 19th overall.
