Siemens BROTN & Alumni Success

The 2020/21 racing season for NUBC finally kicked off this weekend with the infamous Siemens Boat Race of the North. The race sees Durham and Newcastle’s VIIIs race each other head to head 1500m from the Redheugh Bridge to the Millennium Bridge by the Quayside.

First up was the Women’s 3rd VIIIs. After the coin toss Newcastle raced on the town side, Durham on the Gateshead side. A close knit race to begin with ended up with Newcastle surging under the swing bridge, leading to a wide margin victory.
Following shortly was the Men’s 3rd VIIIs, who followed suit - this time racing on the town side - making it 2 for 2 for NUBC.

This trend continued for the following races, with both the Men’s and Women’s 2nd and 1st VIIIs also taking the victory, meaning a 6/6 win for Newcastle; only the second time in the club’s history.

Huge thank you to Siemens, NE1 and Port of Tyne for their continued support of the event, and a massive thank you also to Durham University for driving up and helping us put on a great day of racing.

The weekend was not only successful in terms of the Boat Race, but also NUBC Alumni Lola Anderson absolutely smashed it out the the World Championships. With it being her international’s debut, she had some phenomenal races, claiming second in the time trial on Friday, putting her through to the  semi-finals, where she placed 2nd again, leading to her successfully getting into the A Final on Sunday. Once again, Lola pulled it out the bag, and after an incredible surge at the finish took the bronze medal.

All in all, an incredibly successful weekend for NUBC.

Hopefully this success will follow us for the rest of the season, with the next race being Durham Regatta this weekend.
