Henley Women’s Regatta

Coming off of BUCS the weekend before, NUBC packed up and headed south to some of the girls’ last race of this season.

Although to describe the lead up to Henley Women’s as relatively stressful, needing to mix around boats, and unfortunately having to scrap our AA 8+ C boats and AA4-, the weekend proved to be a success for the club. In the end we had 2 AA8+, C4-, 2 A 4x-, C2- and an A Lwt 1x

and another A4x- with Alumni Lizzy Fuller in, alongside 3 Tyne Members.

On the Friday, our AA8+ performed well in the Time Trials, coming 3rd (A) and 9th (B) amongst some strong crews, meaning they made it through to the time trials on the Saturday. Our Champ 4- also did well, coming 3rd in their Time Trials, followed by the A 4x- coming 7th, the Lightweight single coming 12th, C2- coming 5th and the composite 4x- coming 9th. Unfortunately, our Lightweight Single was knocked out in her first heat on the Friday too.

On Saturday it was the eights kicking the day off, with the B AA8+ beating Caius, securing a spot in the quarter final against Oxford Brookes later that day. The A AA8+ then paddled over the line for an easy win against Christ Church; looking to race UL later that day. Following shortly, the A4x- won their heat against Nottingham RC and the C4- beat Edinburgh.
Later that afternoon, the B AA8+ unfortunately lost in their quarter final to Oxford Brookes, although put up a good race considering the boat had only rowed as a crew together for a couple days prior. The A AA8+ rowed their way into the semi-finals beating ULO by almost 10seconds. Our Champ 2- unfortunately were knocked out in the quarter final to ULO.

Early on the Sunday, our composite quad unfortunately lost out to London Rowing Club, and the A4x- lost out to the eventual winners of Tideway Scullers.
One of the most entertaining races of the week had to have been the semi-final of the AA8+: NCL vs Oxford Brookes. After taking a lead at the beginning of the race, Newcastle stormed back on Oxford Brookes to unfortunately lose out on the final by less than two seconds.
Finally, to end the week, after excellent performances over the weekend, the champ 4- unfortunately lost their final to ULO.

Overall, although NUBC didn’t take any wins, the club had a fantastic weekend of racing, especially after such an uncertain few days running up to the event.
Our attention now turns to the finale of the 2021 season at Henley Royal.
